Real life and very typical phrases with comparative adjectives

Knowing and using these typical English phrases I do think is a good way to get more familiar with the comparatives.

Come on, pick your favourite one!

Your heart is bigger (or: larger) than life!  (this is good to   appreciate – with a touch of emphasis –  somebody’s generosity. Needless to say the possessive adjective ‘Your’ can be easily replaced by any other possessive adjective).

Better late than never

Better now than later

Better safe than sorry

Things are going better and better

(le cose stanno andando di bene in meglio / sempre meglio)

Things are going worse and worse

(le cose stanno andando di male in peggio / sempre peggio)

The sooner, the better  (più presto è,  meglio è)

The newer, the better

The bigger the lie, the better (se devi dire una bugia dilla grossa)

The more, the better

The more you read, the better

The more, the merrier

The more. . . , the more . . .

The more cigarettes you have, the more you smoke

So much the better!  (tanto meglio!)

From bad to worse

From good to better

For better or worse   (1 – nel bene e nel male; 2 – nella buona o nella cattiva sorte; 3 – comunque vadano le cose)
